Book Description
Introduction
In the Vedic literature after Rgveda and Samaveda comes Yajurveda. The meaning of Yajurveda is Yajuşäm Vedah (यजुषां वेदः) 'Yajus' has many meanings. The Yajurveda is indeed a collection of prose mantras or verses primarily used in the performance of Yajñas, which are ancient Vedic rituals. These mantras are composed in a language called Vedic Sanskrit and are meant to be chanted or recited by priests during the rituas. The Yajurveda is one of the four Vedas, the sacred texts of Hinduism, and it primarily deals with the rituals and sacrifices prescribed in the Vedic tradition. The term "Yajurveda" itself translates to "the Veda of sacrifices" or "the knowledge of sacrificial formulas." The meaning of 'yajus' is "worship" (Puja) also. The mantras of Rgveda are the eulogies of the gods while the mantras of the Yajurveda describe the methods and the rituals to perform Yajñas for the gods. It can be said that Rgveda is knowledge ie theory while Yajurveda is related to action ie. practical aspect. The priest of Yajurveda is called "Adhvaryu" ie one who conducts 'yajña.' He is different from "Hota," the priest of the Rgveda whose duty was to invoke the gods and also is different from "Udgātā," the priest of the Samaveda whose duty was to chant the mantras with correct notations. It was not expected of "Adhvaryu" to invoke the gods or chant the mantras properly. Having the knowledge of conducting "Yajña was enough for him "अध्वरं युनक्ति" He was the manager and conductor of "Yajña.
