Preface

Namo bhagavate tubhyam vasudevaya dhimahi

pradyumnayaniruddhaya namah sanskarsanaya ca

An up-to-date knowledge about the essentials of sarira - the physio-anatomy - is must for a medical student as well as the clinician. It includes fundamentals, theories and principles of ayurveda The theory of pancamahabhuta, tridosa, saptadhatu, agni, etc., are the guiding principles of ayurveda, the specialised medical system. Sarira-vicaya is the part of anatomy, which deals with the dissection of the human-body. The techniques of the preservation of dead-body (mrtasodhana) and blunt dissection with the help of kurca (brush), made up of hairs or bamboo, are also mentioned in ancient texts. Most of the subject matter is available in the form of applied anatomy. The knowledge of marma-sarira (vital energy points) has an important role in the treatment of trauma, injuries and sports-medicine. Therefore, the marma-vijnana (traumatology) has been quoted as a major branch- of the surgery.

Most of the subject matter is scattered in different ayurvedic classics. The approach of ayurveda for providing the interpretation of structural and functional aspect is more precise and brief. The terminelogy used in the ancient texts requires a scientific interpretation for present day understanding. The basic elemental composition in the human body is explained in terms of dosa, dhatu and mala. Tridosas are the biological entity, which deal with the psycho-somatic reality of the living body. Basically, vatadi dosas are the functional components of the body - 'svarupam hi vatadinam karyagamyam hI. Due to predominance of rajoguna, vatadosa is the most subtle and an action-oriented substance. The pittadosa is predominated by sattvaguna, and it has knowledge based power, while kaphadosa has the mass-producing property due to presence of tamoguna. They can be identified as the form of energy, as the energy is the ability to do work. More-over the energy is a measure of mass. According to Cakrapani, the commentator of carakasamhita.' there is no difference between the energy and the matter - 'guna-gunino hi paramarthatah bheda na asti. Same principle has been defined by Mr. Einstein, a modern day renowned scientist and philosopher. In the present book, the available material on dehaparamanu, bijabhaga, bijabhagavayava and Ojas in ayurvedic texts have been presented with the appropriate explanations in a scientific and comprehensive manner, and as such it gives a new dimension to the researchers in this field. Efforts have been done to incorporate both ancient as well as the current medical knowledge. By going through this book, one can have a total idea of complete and up-to-date knowledge regarding the anatomical and physiological aspect of the human body. It is not only useful in understanding the physiological mechanism of the body, but also useful in understanding the complex relationship between structure and functions of the body. The greater part of this book is devoted to an exposition of the various factors responsible for the physiological homeostasis. It serves an enormously practical guide to assist the scholars, who want to learn and utilize the ancient wisdom in the light of modern scientific development.

lt is my pride that I belong to a family which is engaged in the profession of ayurvedic medicine since last two centuries at Baldeo (Mathura). Vaidyakulbhusana Pt. Dayakrishnaji (1795-1845) was the founder of this noble profession in our family. He collected valuable literature on the subject, such as jvaratimirabhaskara, jvaraparajaya, langhanapathyanirnaya, arkaprakasa, madanu-sita-sikandarasahi etc. These manuscripts are available in my personal library. Rajvaidya Pt. Shridharaji Pandya (1836-1906) continued this profession traditionally. He was a leading practitioner as well as a prominent social reformer. He was also a personal physician of Maharaja of Kota and other States of Rajasthan. His son, Vaidyaraj Pt. Pannilalji (1870-1934) promoted his family tradition. There-after, my father Vaidyaraj Pt. Hotilalji Sharma (1899-1985) got the formal education of ayurveda. He was a famous physician of his time and he established an ayurvedic pharmacy for quality medicines. He was also honoured by the society for his valuable services. My brother, Vaidya Bhuvanendra Dutt Shastri and his both sons are institutionally qualified of ayurveda. They are engaged in private practice and running a pharmacy.

I express my indebtedness to all those who have inspired me for this kind of work. I gratefully acknowledge the inspiration and guidance of Vaidya Mukundilal dwivedi, Ex-Director of Ayurveda, U.P., Kaviraj Niranjan Deo, Ex-Principal - Ayurvedic College, Gurukul Kangari, Hardwar, and Prof. (Dr.) Jyotirmitra, Deptt. of Basic Principles, I.M.S., B.H.U., Varanasi. It is my duty to be thankful to my wife, Dr. Mithlesh Pandey and my daughter, Dr. Kalpana Sharma, C.M.O.(Ayurveda), E.S.I.C:, New Delhi, who assisted me with their valuable views and advice. I am highly thankful to Dr. Praveen Kant Pandey, Assistant Professor, M. A. College (Delhi University), who helped me a lot in making graphics, sketches and diagrams. With the active co-operation of all the associates, it could be possible to bring out this book in the present form. I express my gratitude to Shri Brijmohan Dass, Kamlesh Gupta and Mr. Sachin M/S Chowkhamba Sanskrit Series Office, Varanasi. who have always supported me in publishing my work.

I hope that the scholars and researchers of modern medical science, especially the ayurveda would be benefited from this book.
