This Madhubani painting is the story of Ganesha's birth, told pictorially, using bright colours. The artist starts the tale from the left corner below with an encounter of Shiva and the toddler Ganesha, whom the former does not recognize. The next scene shows them entering into an argument and Shiva beheading his son in anger. Parvati emerges to see her son in that state. She is not only grieved but very angry with Shiva and orders him to restore her son. Shiva is left with no choice under the circumstances. He sends for the head of an elephant, joins it to the headless body of Ganesha and infuses life into him.
The painting explicitly explains the circumstances leading to the birth of Ganesha in the form that we are so familiar with.
The artist has made an indiscriminate use of bright colours. The hills of Mount Kailash are also done in different exuberant colours. Trees, shrubs and flowers find a prominent place in the painting.
