Although he was less well known as a classical singer, in his homeland Nusrat was admired for his great mastery of classical ragas. The scion of a family of distinguished classical musicians, stretching back more than six centuries, he popularised the blending of khayal singing and techniques with qawwali, such as the interjection of complex alap improvisations (with murkis and meends) and sargam improvisations.
A master of many trades, and jack of none, Nusrat had the ability to transport the listener, whether in concert halls or through his numerous recordings. In a world where differences are increasingly being exploited to divide people, he used his unrivalled talent to unify audiences across the globe.
