This enormous vase in brass is a product of hollow casting, wherein, a clay model of the vase was made over which was applied a thick coating of prepared wax. The mould was kept rotating on the lathe, as the hot wax was spread. A few more processes later, the wax was melted out and replaced by molten metal.
This brassware comes from Moradabad, a town in Uttar Pradesh, a predominantly Muslim town and the Islamic influence is evident. The patterns are linear, geometric and floral. Within the circles on the main body of the vase, there are examples of Islamic calligraphy. The patterns are incised by the process of etching the surface is coated with some acid resisting varnish and then with the etching needle the design is made and then treated with acid.
A lot of effort and a tedious process went in to turn out this beautiful vase.
