Two Persian lovers sit under a blooming tree, longing for each other. Several birds perched on its numerous branches add to the romantic sentiment through their melodious songs while the leaves and flowers, slightly rustling in the light wind, seem to convey the delicacy of sentiment. A musician as beautiful as the mood of the painting, and as soft as the hues which lend it its character, enhances the yearning of the lovers for each other through the strings of her lyre. The stream flows along slowly and languorously, in harmony with the thematic setting. The animals too cavort around in pairs, contributing their sentiment to the artwork.

The youth is bedecked in a rich and ornamented dress, while his lover is draped in a blue attire and suitably adorned with numerous pearl and ornaments. Their is an almost mystical streak underlining the painting, emphasized also by the musical element. As is well known, music was an integral part of Sufism. The two lovers desiring each other can be interpreted in this context as the soul's yearning for union with god.
