Vishnu is the most important god of the Hindu Trinity. Whenever the forces of Evil began to dominate the world, Vishnu descended from the Heavens in one or the other incarnation.

He assumed the form of half man, half lion to destroy Hiranyakashipu who had obtained several boons making him invincible. He could neither be killed by man or beast, neither in the day or by night, neither inside nor out and no weapon could do him injury. Vishnu then assumed the Narasimha Avatar, tore Hiranyakashipu with his claws at twilight time, sitting on the door sill.

In a painting clearly divided into three sections has an image of Narasimha placed in a temple devoted to him. This avatar sporting eight arms, holds all kinds of weapons in his hands. The image is placed on an altar, set to be worshipped. On either side are devotees, bare feet, holding their hands in obeisance, their heads bent. Vishnu is held in reverence in any form that he appears in.
