One kind of picture that was popular with the Mughals was the equestrian portrait. They realized the dignity and importance of a fine horse and the pictorial effect it lent. This painting shows a kind of stylistic amalgamation between Persian and Indian painting.

The spirited steed, elegant and finely formed, nostrils flared, mouth slightly open, has all legs positioned in a galloping mode. It has a curvaceous, graceful mane merging with an even more graceful body. The head is well proportioned with human-like eyes and eyebrows. A curl of hair hangs down his forehead like a beloved's cascading tresses. It is a lively study, the animal's brown coat strikingly placed against a flat, unmodulated yellowish green that fills the entire ground at the back.

It is not the animal alone with its brown coat that the painter presents, but other things like the rich saddle, the ornamental straps that hug the horses' chest and belly, and pieces of jewelry placed on its neck and shoulders. The superbly built animal, plumed and decked also has playfulness in its manner. By far, one of the best equestrian portraits it possesses a restless energy. The drawing line is dynamic and controlled, enhancing the dignity of the portrait.
