Poetry and painting are very closely related. Not only was the poetic sense one of the elements of art for many centuries, but over a long period painting was poetry's most favoured mode of expression. In fact, all great painting is steeped in poetry.

Recreating scenes from Jayadeva's Gita-Govinda, the artist infuses life into the character of Radha and Krishna. In the month of Savan, the monsoon season, swings can be seen in every nook of the villages even today. In this picture, the impending clouds in the background denote the rainy season as do the strutting peacocks in the foreground.

Seated on the swing, the arms of the lovers are about each other's necks, eye meets eye and soft words are whispered. It is human love which transcends itself to become divine love. Radha is dressed in a short choli and a saree, the end of which covers her head. Her arched eyebrows, sharp nose and a sensuous mouth overshadow the attractive jewellery that she wears. Krishna is curiously not dressed in his usual pitamber dhoti but a skirt like garment with tight pyjamas. His crown is conical in shape with an elaborate prabhavali. He wears long garlands of pearls and wild flowers.

The landscape consists of mango groves, banana plantains of greenery till as far as the eye reaches. Tiny birds rest in the dense foliage of trees sparkling with tiny dots that make them look like sprinkled with gems. Pairs of birds denote the togetherness of Radha and Krishna

A vibrant composition with an outstanding palette.
