Buddhism is a world religion with a historical founder, who by becoming enlightened (Buddha), discovered and taught a way to salvation. As Buddhist devotion developed, a super-human nature was accorded to the teacher. The most popular of all Mortal Buddhas is Gautama, who is most widely represented in Indian Buddhist art. Buddha is seated cross-legged making a gesture of 'drawing the wheel of Law." To set the wheel in motion in Buddhist language means to 'preach the order of things.' Iconography has seized upon this significant imagery. This dharmachakramudra is characteristic of the first sermon of the Buddha. In this hand gesture, both the hands are held near the breast. The tips of the index finger and the thumb are joined and they touch one of the fingers of the left hand, the palm being turned inwards.

Here, Buddha sits in padmasana, wearing a robe reaching to his ankles and covering both his shoulders. There is tranquillity on his face and his closed eyes emanate the internal bliss that he has achieved. The softly smiling lips convey content. The pale green halo just adds to the serenity of the picture.
