This unique representation of the goddess is popular in South India. When she is portrayed as Vishnu's sister, she is eight-armed and holds his emblems - the conch shell and the discus. She is also visualized as Shiva's consort and in her other hands she holds Shiva's trident, a bow, a sword and a shield. The main two hands show the abhaya and the varada mudras. She is seated on a decorated plinth with one leg folded in and the other pendant. The multiple roles of the goddess are apparent in this kalamkari; she is not only the battle queen but also a protective mother inspiring reverence.
Seated below the plinth is Durga's vehicle, the lion. The lion is seen as mirroring certain traits which probably displays more strongly the might of the divinity.
