Hanuman was the son of Vayu by a monkey mother. He is given a chief role in the Ramayana where he is acknowledged to have rendered most valuable service to Rama. He was the most powerful of the monkey chiefs. Helped by his allies Jambavan the bear and Jatayu the vulture, he assisted Rama in his victory over the demon Rama.
Shown here as a towering personality, standing tall over the world, he has a powerful body. Various hues and shading helps to give volume to his body as much as prominence to the muscles. His long tail rises above and encircles his head. His adornment is a studded crown. In his hand he holds a mace, his only weapon. Rays emanate from his head forming a brilliant halo. He stands out more powerfully against a dark background.
From the gods they seek power. So in the ritualization of energies, Hanuman the monkey general of Rama's army becomes a link between cosmic energies and human desire for strength.
