One of the exceptionally impressive and formidable goddess of the Hindu pantheon and also one of its most popular - is the goddess Durga. Her primary mythological function is to combat demons who threaten the stability of the cosmos.

The creator of this batik work takes the assistance of colour blue to depict a tale where the goddess decapitates the buffalo and the demon Mahisa emerges in human form from the buffalo's neck and attacks her. Durga appears here sans the fierce lion she is usually depicted with. She is shown with many arms, each of which wields a weapon. She wears a crown with a halo behind and ornaments to beautify every part of her body. The feminine attributes of the goddess are prominent - against the backdrop of multiple limbs. Her posture suggests power as she places one foot over the buffalo as Mahisasura escapes from it. She holds the trident in her left hand and forcefully pierces the demon as soon as it emerges from the animal.
