Painted in the Pahari idiom, this miniature bears the imprint of Mughal style, imbibing its best elements.

The royalty of that era, if not at war, was seeking pleasure - hunting, frolicking at the harem or sometimes fishing, as this painting depicts. In an extremely relaxed environment, the prince and his lady love sit on boulders beside the lake catching fish. The prince uses a fishing rod but the charming princess throws in a net in the most delicate manner. Their haul is being chopped, barbecued and served by the royal maid who has accompanied them for that purpose. The woman attendant the behind prince holds a fan while the one behind the princess holds a whisk made of peacock feathers. She is being coaxed by the cook to serve the delicacy to the princess, but she looks hesitant.

The beauty of nature has been captured well by the artist. The distant land merging with the sky line, the green stretches intruding into the water body, the lake abounding in fish, all of them painted in muted browns and greens. The costumes of the prince and others bear bright, jewel-like colours, providing the required brightness to the painting. This description by Renu Rana.
