Tanjore paintings are famous for their creative illustrations of devotional icons which are loved by everyone and among them, Lord Krishna’s paintings are given utmost love. The All-Attractive Krishna, the Supreme Lord, is the source of everything and possesses all six opulence – fame, beauty, knowledge, wealth, power, and renunciation, all at the same time and in infinite quantity. He descended on the earth in Dwapar Yuga to re-establish Dharma (God-consciousness). To distribute Krishna Prema or Prema Bhakti among the individual souls is the main reason for the appearance of the Lord. Although Krishna appeared as an ordinary man, His uncommon and mystic activities were always an astonishment for everyone around Him. The entire Dwarka was completely absorbed in pure bliss as Krishna, the source of all pleasures, was present there. Everyone loved Him with all their heart and soul. Certainly, where there is Lord Krishna, there is utmost joy and an eternal festival.
The Supreme Personality of God sits upon a throne in His nicely decorated darbar (court) placing His left leg on the right. He is clad in a short-length dhoti and is adorned with several ornaments on His beautiful transcendental body. Krishna loved stealing and eating butter from the houses of gopis (cowherd girls) for which He is also known as Makhan Chor. Here, He holds a butterball in His right hand while the other arm rests upon the left leg. The gopis present in the darbar serve Krishna with love and devotion because He is their life and soul. Everyone present there looks at the Lord with their eyes filled with pure bliss. The smile that comes upon the face of Krishna is even sweeter than honey. This painting clearly and wonderfully describes how the presence and remembrance of Krishna can give one the highest form of pleasure and joy. Although no one is superior to Him, He is always eager for His devotees to come to His abode, Goloka Vrindavan, the place where we can get the association of Krishna Himself and be absorbed in pure bliss.
