This extremely beautiful Tanjore painting displays Lakshmi Narasimha. Lord Narasimha appeared in Satya Yuga to save His beloved devotee Prahlad from his demoniac father Hiranyakashipu. The word Narasimha is a blend of two words: ‘Nara’ meaning ‘human’ and ‘Simha’ meaning ‘Lion’, thus, the Lord appeared in the form of half-man and half-lion and killed the demon with His steel-chisels-like nails.
Here, Lord Narasimha is portrayed seated calmly on a beautiful throne with His divine consort Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of fortune, is sitting on His left thigh. Lakshmi is considered to be the feminine or internal energy of the Lord so His fury is subdued by her soft and affectionate nature. The four-armed Lord carries the Sudarshana Chakra in His upper right hand and a conch shell in the left hand while the lower right hand is in Abhaya Mudra. Goddess Lakshmi is clad in a saree and adorned with gold ornaments. Note the intricate detailing of the Prabhavali (arch) surrounding the divine couple and the fact that major part of this painting has been embellished with 24 Karat Gold with perfection is really appreciable. Also, green and red stones have been beautifully embedded upon the gold coating change the entire look of this painting.
