Like Sir Lancelot, the love-mad Majnun fled to the wilds where his sole companions were animals. But unlike the Arthurian knight, whose filthy beard and scraggly hair were alarmingly uncouth, the Iranian lover seems to have been further refined by the experience. Here, he is as gently graceful as the antelope he strokes.

For this flowing, idyllic landscape with its sinuous stream, bright flowers, and pleasing arrangement of birds and beasts, the artist, Mahesh Soni has devised a shimmering palette of cool, pale blues, violets, greens, tans, and gold.

Mahesh Soni's refinement and humor are notably apparent in the detail. The mountain goat, looking as delicious as an edible bun, tiptoes precariously down the steep rocks, while the snow leopard and tiger hiss at one another with unexpected decorum. The latter, in tribute perhaps to the art of China, sports the symbolic Taoist whorl of yang and yin on his shoulder and leg.
