The Mughal miniature developed its own set of rules governing style, artistic deformation, and stylization of reality. Innovations were derived partly from indigenous contemporary trends and partly from European paintings. Migrating from remote central Asian state of Farghana, they were unfamiliar with this huge animal and this accounts for their fascination for elephants.

In a scenic setting, a herd of elephants can be seen walking towards a water pond. The elephants, interestingly, have light coloured trunk, forehead, ears and underbelly - all signs of rarity and good stock. The head of the herd walks ahead while the rest follow. The mother elephant prods the calf to be cautious as it approaches the stony bank. Another elephant is partially shown emerging from the side. This helps to lend movement in an otherwise static scenery. The movement of the trunk of each elephant varies from the other, denoting different moods to a similar environment.

In the foreground, a few waterbirds can be seen playfully flapping their wings and enjoying a swim oblivious to the gigantic animals coming to invade their territory. Rounded rocks divide the water from land. Colourful flowers also find their way around. In the background can be seen the steeply rising hills, and plants can be seen around the centrally placed hillock. A few birds can also be seen in the clear blue sky.
