Vishnu, belonging to the trinity, is seen as the preserver of harmony and the maintainer of order and tradition. He is represented as a tall, handsome youth with blue skin and the attire of an ancient king standing on the lotus floating in the cosmic oceans, he looks regal in fine jewellery and a decorative crown. In his four hands he holds a conch shell (shankha) wheel (chakra), a mace(gada) and a lotus. In his lower right hand he holds the mace, symbol of primeval knowledge. The discus, held in the upper one, represents the mind, the limitless power which, invents and destroys all the spheres and forms of the universe, the nature of which is to revolve. The upper left hand holds the conch, which is a symbol of the origin of existence. The lotus represents the universe, the flower that unfolds in all its glory from the formless, endlessness of the waters.
The colours used in the image are basic red, green and yellow but the background is an unusual wine coloured, looking resplendent with a darker shade of crackle, the chief characteristic of the batik work.
