The natural, brilliant colours of a peacock have been traded here for deep red, cream, and black, but the elegance of the bird has not been compromised. The peacock is in movement as it lifts one claw while jutting out its chest with pride and arrogance. The importance of this bird is three fold. Firstly, a peacock symbolizes immortality, love, courtship, fertility, regal pomp and protection. In Indian art, the peacock represents the lovers prodding with its glamorous display of male beauty. It therefore enjoys a prominent place, especially in Rajasthani and Pahari paintings where love and romance form an eminent theme. The peacock has a religious connotation also, it being the vahana of Kartikeya, the son of Shiva and Parvati. Down south of India, not only is Kartikeya worshipped as a lord of war, his vahana is also considered pious. In contemporary context, this bird is important being the national bird of India.
Curvilinear lines, geometric patterns, serrated jewellery design like patterns fill the steady outline of the peacock that struts resplendent in its majestic beauty!
