The great Garuda is widely worshipped, especially in the Indian subcontinent. In the Nepal region, the aquiline deity takes on a ferocious iconography, a reflection of the popular devotional imagination. The mask of Garuda that you see on this page captures the ferocity and invincibility of the vahana (mount) of Vishnu.

Brass, with a bitone colour finish. An ornate five-spired crown, highly characteristic of Nepalese iconography. Beneath it a brow pouring forth with keen wisdom and downright ruthlessness directed at adharma. The aquiline features of Garuda’s face have been carved with the greatest skill and lifelike detail.

A parasol projection on top and an ornate bust complete the mask composition. The fingers of Garuda entwined around the twin projections from His facial aperture is the most spine-chilling aspect of this work.

The Majestic Presence of Garuda

This striking mask, crafted from resilient brass in Nepal, embodies the divine power and awe-inspiring majesty of Garuda, the celestial king of birds and the eternal mount of Lord Vishnu. Garuda is a pivotal figure in Hindu mythology, renowned for his strength, speed, and his eternal battle against the Naga, the serpent deities. His form, a blend of man and eagle, symbolizes the triumphant spirit over ignorance and evil. This mask captures that essence with its fierce expression and elaborate detailing, a testament to the skilled artisans of Nepal.

A Symbol of Divine Protection and Cosmic Balance

Garuda's significance extends beyond his role as Vishnu's vahana. He is also a symbol of immense power, loyalty, and liberation. Ancient tales often portray Garuda swooping down from the heavens to rescue devotees, offering protection from all forms of adversity. His constant vigilance against the serpents represents the perpetual struggle between divine order and chaos, and his victory assures the preservation of cosmic balance. The intricate design of this mask, with its sharp beak, piercing eyes, and ornate headdress, evokes the divine energy and commanding presence that Garuda commands. The inclusion of coiled serpents, often seen entwined with Garuda, further emphasizes this profound cosmic narrative and the protective aura he bestows.

Craftsmanship and Cultural Significance

Handcrafted by Nepalese artisans, this Garuda mask is a masterpiece of traditional metalwork. The brass material lends a timeless quality, allowing the intricate carvings and textures to be appreciated for generations. The detailed ornamentation, from the layered headdress to the delicately rendered feathers and the coiled serpents, speaks volumes about the devotion and artistry poured into its creation. Such masks are not merely decorative objects; they are imbued with spiritual and cultural importance, often used in religious ceremonies, festivals, and as powerful talismans to ward off negativity and invite blessings. Owning this Garuda mask is like bringing a piece of ancient mythology and profound spiritual heritage into your living space, a constant reminder of strength, protection, and divine grace.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
