The Healer of All Ills

This exquisite brass statue depicts Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, a significant figure in Mahayana Buddhism. Revered as the Bodhisattva of healing, he is invoked to cure physical and mental suffering and to offer salvation from the cycle of rebirth. His practice is central to alleviating ailments, offering solace, and guiding beings towards enlightenment and spiritual well-being. He is also known as the Blue Lapis Lazuli Light King, symbolizing the vastness of the universe and the clarity of pure wisdom.

Embodiment of Compassion and Wisdom

The Medicine Buddha is depicted in the traditional lotus position, seated on a beautifully rendered lotus throne. His right hand rests on his right knee, palm outward, in the gesture of giving boons and dispelling fear (Varada mudra). His left hand is cradled in his lap, holding a bowl filled with medicinal herbs, often represented by the Arura fruit (Haritaki), which is known for its healing properties in Tibetan medicine. This posture and symbolic offering represent his boundless compassion and his ability to heal all afflictions, both mundane and spiritual. The serene expression on his face, with downcast eyes, conveys profound peace and deep empathy for all sentient beings. The intricate golden robes draped over his shoulder and chest are adorned with detailed motifs, adding a touch of regal splendor to his divine form.

A Legacy of Healing

In Buddhist lore, Bhaisajyaguru is said to have made twelve great vows before attaining enlightenment, vowing to eliminate sickness and suffering among all beings. His image serves as a powerful reminder of these vows and the potential for healing that lies within the universe and within ourselves. Meditating on the Medicine Buddha or chanting his mantra is believed to be particularly effective in overcoming illness, generating positive karma, and purifying negative actions. This brass representation, meticulously handcrafted in India, brings the sacred presence of this benevolent deity into your home or meditation space, offering a tangible connection to his healing energy and spiritual guidance. The warm, metallic sheen of the brass, combined with the detailed craftsmanship, creates an object of profound beauty and spiritual significance.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
