Embodiment of Healing and Compassion

This exquisite brass statue depicts the Medicine Buddha, Bhaiṣajyaguru, a profound figure in Tibetan Buddhism revered as the master of healing. He is the embodiment of the healing power of all Buddhas, a celestial being who cures suffering – both physical and mental – by manifesting his enlightened qualities. In Mahayana Buddhism, the Medicine Buddha is one of the eight principal Buddhas. He is believed to possess the power to remove the suffering caused by the three poisons: greed, hatred, and delusion, which are seen as the root causes of illness and unhappiness. The serene posture of the Medicine Buddha is deeply symbolic. Seated in the lotus position, he represents the attainment of enlightenment and inner peace. His left hand rests in his lap, holding a begging bowl filled with amrita, the elixir of life, signifying his ability to bestow immortality and healing. In his right hand, held in the gesture of *vitarka mudra* (the gesture of debate or discourse), he holds the stem of the *Artemisia Indica* plant, or *miracle herb*, symbolizing his power to alleviate sickness and pain. This imagery directly connects him to his role as the ultimate physician, capable of curing all ailments. ––––––––––

Artistic Craftsmanship and Sacred Symbolism

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail by skilled artisans in India, this statue is cast in brass, a material traditionally associated with divinity and permanence. The rich golden hue of the brass lends a sacred aura to the figure, enhancing its spiritual significance. The flowing robes are adorned with intricate patterns and borders, showcasing the artistry and dedication of the craftsman. The serene expression on the Buddha's face, with downcast eyes and a gentle smile, emanates peace and profound wisdom, inviting contemplation and devotion. The urna, a tuft of hair between the eyebrows, and the ushnisha, a cranial protuberance signifying his spiritual attainment, are also rendered with precision. The elaborate lotus pedestal upon which the Medicine Buddha is seated further amplifies the sacred symbolism, representing purity and spiritual unfolding. ––––––––––

A Source of Solace and Well-being

The presence of a Medicine Buddha statue in a home or meditation space is considered auspicious, believed to purify the environment and bring blessings of health, longevity, and well-being. In Tibetan Buddhist traditions, chanting the mantra of the Medicine Buddha, Om Vairochana Amogha Vairocana Maha Ciktsa Samaya A-ha A-ha A-ha A-um-ma-ni-pad-me-hum, is a common practice for seeking healing and spiritual guidance. This statue serves not only as a beautiful object of art but also as a potent reminder of the transformative power of compassion and the ultimate potential for healing that lies within us all. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhist art and philosophy, bringing a touch of sacred heritage and spiritual solace into the modern world.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
