19" Standing Ardhanarishvara (Shiva-Shakti) in Bronze

$2305

The traditional South Indian image of Ardhanarishvara. Fashioned from bronze; the deity standing on the pistil of an upturned lotus bloom. Tall, stately form, set off by the tapering, templetop-like crown. These are the foremost hallmarks of South Indian iconography.

Ardhanarishvara is the roopa of ishvara that accommodates the feminine as much as the masculine. Visually, it is the fusion of Shiva into Parvati, purusha into prakrti, energy into matter. And what an elegantly sculpted fusion it is - superbly toned limbs, the distinguished features of the twin torso of the male and the female, and the luxuriant adornment embossed all over.

The rich, earth colour of pure bronze medium. In places, overtones of a barely discernible blue-green. This, together with the finesse of Ardhanarishvara’s form and features, betray the purity and the authenticity of the bronze.

The Divine Ardhanarishvara: A Symbol of Unity

This magnificent 19-inch standing Ardhanarishvara statue, crafted from bronze (Panchaloha), is a breathtaking representation of the Hindu deity embodying the union of Shiva and Shakti. Ardhanarishvara, meaning "half-Lord," depicts the divine masculine and feminine energies intertwined as one being. The right half embodies Shiva, the destructive and transformative aspect of the divine, while the left half represents Shakti, the creative and nurturing power. This powerful fusion symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things, the balance between opposing forces, and the ultimate harmony of the universe. The intricate detailing of the statue, from the elaborate headdress to the flowing garments, reflects the skill and artistry of traditional bronze casting techniques. This statue is more than just a decorative piece; it's a tangible expression of a profound spiritual concept.

A Journey into Mythology

The Ardhanarishvara form is not simply a visual representation; it’s deeply rooted in ancient Hindu mythology. Stories tell of how Shiva, in response to Parvati’s desire to share his being completely, manifested this unique form. This act underscores the essential truth of Shaivism, where Shiva's power is both independent and intrinsically linked to Shakti. In the image, we see a fusion of attributes - Shiva's third eye and crescent moon, along with Parvati's gentle grace and ornaments. This duality reflects the multifaceted nature of reality itself. The Ardhanarishvara iconography transcends mere gender representation and points to a far deeper understanding of cosmic energies and their harmonious coexistence.

Craftsmanship and the Panchaloha Tradition

The statue is cast using the ancient Panchaloha method, a traditional South Indian technique of bronze casting using five metals: gold, silver, copper, brass, and zinc. This alloy creates a unique patina, lending the statue its rich, earthy tone. The resulting bronze piece is not just strong and durable but also embodies the spiritual essence of the deity. The intricate carvings and attention to detail speak volumes about the dedication and skill of the artisans who created this piece. It’s a testament to the rich legacy of Indian craftsmanship, a tradition passed down through generations.

Bringing the Divine into Your Home

This Ardhanarishvara statue is more than just a beautiful piece of art; it's a powerful symbol of unity, balance, and spiritual harmony. Its presence will transform your space, imbuing it with a sense of serenity and spiritual significance. Whether you are a devotee of Hinduism, a collector of religious art, or simply someone who appreciates exceptional craftsmanship, this statue will be a cherished addition to your collection. The rich bronze color, the intricate detailing, and the powerful symbolism combine to create a truly unique and awe-inspiring piece. Place it in your meditation space, your living room, or anywhere you wish to cultivate an atmosphere of peace and contemplation. Its commanding presence will serve as a constant reminder of the inherent balance and beauty within the universe and within yourself. This statue is a gateway to exploring the intricate tapestry of Hindu mythology and the enduring power of the divine feminine and masculine energies.

A Timeless Legacy

The creation of religious iconography in India is not merely an artistic endeavour; it's a deeply spiritual practice. It invites contemplation, inspiring a deeper understanding of the complexities and interconnectedness of life.
