A Nepalese statue of the Hindu Goddess Saraswati. The serene dvibhujadharini (the one possessed of two arms) strums the veena, whose long and slender stem resembles the beauteous torso of its divine mistress. Such a Saraswati statue is indicative of Her role as the presiding deity over aesthetics, learning, and the fine arts.

This Saraswati murti has an interesting colour scheme. Of that deeply immersed face and the perfectly aligned figure, the complexion is pale, solid green. The strip of fabric across Her bosom, the embroidered dhoti that clothes Her limbs, and the veena in Her hands are a shade darker with metallic overtones of gold.

In this Saraswati murti, the Devi is seated on a high lotus throne featuring two layers of gold-bellied petals. Her handsome, sharp-featured face is framed by a style of crown that is characteristic of Nepalese iconography, long karnakundalas that graze Her delicate shoulders, and a necklace that sets off the shapely decolletage.

The Embodiment of Knowledge and the Arts

Behold the exquisite form of Saraswati, the revered Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. This magnificent brass sculpture, handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, captures the divine essence of the Devi in a captivating Nepalese rendition. Seated in a graceful posture, she is depicted in the act of playing her veena, an ancient stringed instrument, embodying her association with all creative endeavors and the harmonious flow of sound and thought. The serene expression on her face and the gentle curve of her fingers upon the veena evoke a sense of profound peace and intellectual clarity.

A Symphony of Divine Attributes

The goddess is adorned in elaborate traditional attire, with intricate patterns gracing her garments, suggesting the rich tapestry of culture and art she presides over. Her elaborate headdress, embellished with symbolic motifs, signifies her supreme wisdom and celestial status. The use of brass, a material revered for its purity and durability, lends a timeless quality to this artwork, ensuring that its beauty and spiritual significance will endure for generations. The delicate craftsmanship extends to every aspect of the sculpture, from the subtle musculature of her form to the finely rendered details of her ornaments.

Echoes of Mythology and Devotion

In Hindu mythology, Saraswati is not only the patron of the arts but also the source of consciousness and intuition. She is often depicted as the consort of Brahma, the creator, signifying the essential role of knowledge and creativity in the act of creation. Her vehicle, the swan, symbolizes purity and the ability to discern truth from falsehood. This image of Saraswati, with her serene countenance and musical instrument, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of learning, creative expression, and the pursuit of wisdom in our lives. This stunning piece is a testament to the enduring legacy of Indian artistic traditions and a beautiful invitation to connect with the divine feminine energy of knowledge and inspiration. The Nepalese style adds a unique spiritual flavor, reflecting the syncretic blend of Buddhism and Hinduism prevalent in the region, further enriching the cultural narrative of this divine representation.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
