Kubera, also known as Kuvera, is believed to be the son of Sage Vishrava and Ilavida. Originally a yaksha (a nature spirit), his devotion and austere penance earned him the favor of Brahma, the creator god. Brahma granted him immortality and made him the guardian of all the treasures of the earth, bestowing upon him the city of Alaka in the Himalayas as his divine abode. According to legend, Kubera once possessed a less-than-attractive appearance. However, through unwavering devotion to Shiva, he was granted a more pleasing form and elevated to the status of a Lokapala, one of the guardians of the directions, specifically the north. His association with the north further solidifies his role as a bringer of fortune, as the north is considered an auspicious direction in Vastu Shastra.
