Krishna’s victory over Kaliya is a decisive moment in the history of dharma. As expounded in the sixteenth chapter of the tenth canto of Bhagavata Purana, Kaliya had made a home for himself in the Yamuna of Vrindavan and driven away all forms of life within a sizable distance from his dwelling. When his presence sent the Lord’s beloved Radha into a frenzy, it was too much for Him to bear. What followed was the subjugation of dharma over adharma.

The image of the naga nrtya, or of Krishna dancing (‘nrtya’) atop the serpent (‘naga’), is one of divine victory. The murti that you see on this page is sculpted from pure bronze. It is a superior medium to work with, demanding great skill and patience on the part of the artisan, and lends the composition its unmistakable gold ochre colour.

Beneath the foot of Krishna are the five hoods of Kaliya. Within its folds is the form of a miniscule man whose hands are in the humble namaskara mudra. Its tail is in the hands of the victor, whose every finery has been visually enunciated with the greatest skill.

The Triumph of Innocence: Krishna and Kaliya

Behold a breathtaking representation of one of the most iconic episodes from the life of Lord Krishna. This impressive bronze sculpture captures the divine child in his triumphant dance upon the multi-headed serpent, Kaliya. The scene is alive with the power of the divine and the triumph of good over evil. Every curve and detail, from Krishna’s playful expression to the intricate scales of Kaliya, has been meticulously rendered, breathing life into this ancient story. This sculpture is more than just a beautiful piece of art. It is a powerful symbol of overcoming challenges, of fearlessness in the face of adversity, and the boundless strength of divine grace. It is a celebration of Krishna’s divinity, highlighting an important phase in his journey from a mischievous child to a revered deity.

The Tale of Kaliya: A Serpent's Submission

The story of Krishna subduing Kaliya unfolds in the sacred waters of the Yamuna River. Kaliya, a venomous Naga (serpent) of immense power, had poisoned the river, rendering it unusable and threatening the lives of the people of Vrindavan. The very air surrounding Kaliya’s lair was toxic, and birds that dared to fly overhead would fall dead into the water. Hearing the plight of his people, the young Krishna, brimming with divine energy, fearlessly plunged into the poisoned waters. Kaliya, enraged by the intrusion, attacked the boy, constricting him within his coils. But Krishna, an embodiment of cosmic power, began to expand, forcing Kaliya to release him. He then leaped onto the serpent's heads and began his divine dance, the Tandava. Each step of Krishna’s dance was a hammer blow, forcing Kaliya to submit. The serpent, weakened and humbled, finally pleaded for his life. Witnessing the suffering of her husband, Kaliya’s wives begged Krishna to spare him. Moved by their devotion and Kaliya's submission, Krishna relented, ordering Kaliya to leave the Yamuna River and never return. In this way, Krishna restored the river to its purity and saved the people of Vrindavan from certain death.
