The Divine Healer: Embodiment of Compassion and Well-being

This exquisite brass statue depicts the revered Medicine Buddha, also known as Bhaiṣajyaguru, a celestial bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism. He is the embodiment of healing and compassion, emanating a serene presence that offers solace and spiritual comfort. With his closed eyes in meditation and a gentle, knowing smile, he embodies perfect tranquility. The intricate details of his monastic robes, adorned with delicate patterns, speak to the meticulous craftsmanship and the deep reverence with which this statue was created.

Symbolism and Sacred Attributes

In his left hand, which rests in his lap, the Medicine Buddha holds the alms bowl, a universally recognized symbol of renunciation and detachment from worldly desires. Within this bowl, he carries the Arura fruit, a potent medicinal herb in Tibetan tradition, symbolizing his power to cure all forms of suffering, both physical and mental. His right hand is extended, palm outward, in the gesture of *varada mudra*, the boon-granting gesture, signifying his readiness to bestow blessings, healing, and protection upon all sentient beings. Legend has it that the Medicine Buddha made twelve vows to liberate beings from suffering, particularly from illness and the cycle of rebirth. His presence is believed to dispel ignorance, fear, and delusion, guiding devotees towards enlightenment and well-being. The Makara, a mythical sea creature often depicted as a dragon-like beast, adorning the base, is a protector against negative forces and obstacles.

Craftsmanship and Cultural Heritage

Handmade in India, this brass statue is a testament to the rich artistic heritage and spiritual traditions of the region. The process of creating such a piece is a sacred endeavor, often passed down through generations of skilled artisans who imbue each creation with their devotion and expertise. The use of brass, a durable and lustrous metal, has been a favored medium for religious iconography for centuries, lending a timeless quality and a warm glow to the sculpture. The meticulous attention to detail, from the serene expression on the Buddha’s face to the delicate patterns on his robes, reflects a deep understanding of Buddhist iconography and a profound commitment to artistic excellence. This statue is not merely an object of beauty but a conduit for spiritual connection and a powerful reminder of the path to inner peace and healing.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
