“Is my mother Shyama black?

People say Kali is black,

but my heart doesn’t agree.

If She’s black,

how can She light up the world?”

Kamalakanta Bhattacharya, the Bengali devotee poet whose verses became the voice of Ramakrishna’s Bhakti penned the indescribable glory of Maa Kali in these emotive lines. The dark-skinned Hindu mother goddess for her followers is the cosmic source of energy, whose Teja (brilliance) lightens up the world and whose powers enable the actions of its inhabitants. For them, the warring goddess with skin as dark as the moonless night is celestial beauty incarnate.

This granite black stone Devi Kali statue presents the great mother goddess as an exquisite young woman. Her face emanates an enchanting innocence that betrays the ethereal Sringaar (ornamentation) and combatant mood of Maa Kali. Lotus flower blossoms behind the goddess’s head full of flowing black tresses that wrap her elegant form.

A simple crown, an ornate necklace, a garland of skulls, and a girdle of severed hands form the awe-inspiring attire of this goddess Kali statue which depicts the great mother in her powerful four-armed form. The severed head in the primary right hand of Maa Kali appears distinctively feminine in its features, underlining the moderating level applied by the sculptor to the otherworldly attributes of the great goddess in this granite statue.

Devi’s legs are placed in a dynamic posture- her right leg on the chest of Lord Shiva lying underneath and her left leg balanced on the edge of the pedestal patterned with lines that create the effect of the rocky terrain of uncharted lands, where the great mother resides.
