Manjushri is most commonly represented as eternally young in appearance, with a headdress with one or more chignons, holding the scroll of knowledge in the left hand, and in the right the vertical sword of wisdom, 'which cuts through ignorance' and liberates the spirit from darkness. He is clothed in a monastic robe and adorned with jewels. He is seated in Padmasana. His earliest representation in Japan appears to be that in the Horyu-ji, where he is seated in Padmasana, his hair tied in a high chignon, the right hand in vitarka mudra, the left in varada mudra. Monju Bosatsu is very often shown with a priest's scepter in the right hand in the right hand and the 'book of wisdom' in the left, as in this particular sculpture.
