This awe-inspiring wooden panel presents Krishna as Kautuka (marvel), a sculptural mode in Indian tradition where the image is intentionally composed as a visual riddle. Such works are not meant to be grasped at once.
They draw the viewer into a prolonged act of seeing, where recognition emerges gradually. Kautuka is where devotion and dedication meet- the sculptor demonstrates mastery over form, while the viewer is invited to gaze at the divine.
This particular Kautuka is a recreation of the roof carvings of the Chalukya-period Harihareshwara Temple, located in Solapur, Maharashtra.
At first encounter, Krishna appears as a compact, intertwined body in motion. Limbs overlap, torsos fold, and directions shift without immediate clarity. As the eye lingers, the structure begins to resolve- multiple figures align within one another, each complete, yet inseparable from the whole.
The composition is tightly controlled; every curve and intersection is deliberate, sustaining both ambiguity and coherence. At the centre, Krishna’s face remains composed and steady, crowned and adorned, anchoring the entire construction. His multiplicity does not fracture identity; it expands it. This layered embodiment echoes Vaishnava thought, where Krishna manifests in countless forms while remaining singular in essence.
The painted surface sharpens this experience. The blue of the body, set against red, green, and gold ornament, allows each segment to emerge in sequence, guiding the viewer through stages of recognition rather than presenting a fixed image. As one continues to follow and resolve the interwoven form, attention withdraws from distraction and settles into the act of seeing itself. The effort to “untangle” Krishna becomes inwardly transformative, the mind, engaged in resolving the divine image, loosens its hold on other preoccupations. What begins as visual inquiry turns into a sustained moment of darshana, where clarity of form and clarity of awareness arise together.
