A Representation of Enlightenment

The Gesture of Fearlessness: Abhaya Mudra

Legend has it that a maddened elephant, Nalagiri, was released with the intent to harm the Buddha. Unflinching, Buddha met the charging beast with the Abhaya Mudra, radiating such compassion that the elephant knelt before him, subdued by his benevolence. This mudra is thus a powerful symbol of overcoming obstacles through inner strength and peace. The left hand typically holds a part of the robe. The Awakened One

Siddhartha Gautama, the historical figure who became the Buddha ("the awakened one"), was born a prince in ancient India. Renouncing a life of luxury, he sought to understand the nature of suffering and to find a path to liberation. After years of intense meditation, he achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, vowing not to rise until he had discovered the ultimate truth. He then shared his teachings, the Dharma, with others, forming the foundation of Buddhism. This image, carved in stone, serves as a timeless depiction of the Buddha's peaceful presence.
