Embodiment of Healing and Compassion

This exquisite brass sculpture depicts Bhaishajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism known as the master of healing. In Buddhist lore, Bhaishajyaguru is one of the eight great Bodhisattvas of compassion, representing the aspiration to overcome illness and suffering. He is often invoked for his ability to grant healing, wisdom, and longevity, not only for the physical body but also for the mind and spirit, freeing beings from the poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance. The artistry of this piece is a testament to the rich heritage of Indian craftsmanship. Meticulously handmade from brass, the statue captures the serene and compassionate visage of the Medicine Buddha. His seated posture, a symbol of deep meditation and profound peace, is enhanced by the intricate detailing of his robes. The robes themselves are a remarkable display of artistry, adorned with a mosaic of vibrant turquoise and striking red stones, interspersed with blue accents. This colorful inlay work not only elevates the aesthetic appeal but also signifies the multifaceted nature of healing and well-being. ––––––––––

The Medicine Buddha's Iconography and Significance

Bhaishajyaguru is traditionally depicted holding a medicinal herb or a myrobalan fruit in his left hand, symbolizing his healing powers. In his right hand, often shown resting on his knee or in the gesture of bestowing blessings, he holds a bowl containing the nectar of immortality or the elixir of life. This representation underscores his role as a dispenser of spiritual and physical remedies. The serene expression on his face, with eyes half-closed in contemplation, conveys an aura of profound tranquility and deep empathy for all sentient beings. The urna, a spiral of hair on his forehead, and the ushnisha, a cranial protuberium, are classic attributes of a Buddha, signifying his enlightened consciousness and superior wisdom. The lotus base upon which the Medicine Buddha is seated is another significant symbol in Buddhism, representing purity, enlightenment, and rebirth. The layered petals of the lotus signify the journey of spiritual growth, moving from the muddy depths of worldly attachment towards the clear light of awakening. The intricate carvings on the base further enhance the grandeur and spiritual resonance of the sculpture, making it a focal point for meditation and devotion. This sculpture is not merely an object of beauty but a sacred representation meant to inspire peace, foster well-being, and invoke the blessings of healing and spiritual liberation.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
