Kashmiri embroidery is remarkable more for the skilled execution of a single stitch rather than the elaborate quality of the stitch itself. On this blended fabric called raffal, chain stitch is employed for the entire surface embroidery. This embroidery is done by using an 'ari', a small hooked awl. It is inserted through the cloth in the form of a loop and pulled up through the surface of the cloth to form a stitch. Stems, leaves and flowers abound the shawl, in natural shapes and colours. The outline of the big pink and orange flowers is done in lighter colours of pink and peach and filled in with darker counterparts. Mauve and lilac flowers provide a chromatic relief from the oft-used pinks and reds. There is no hashyia - the surface pattern abruptly ends towards the plain green two ends of this flowery shawl.
It gives a wide choice of colours of matching outfits that could go well with this shawl. The exuberance of the pattern and the brilliance of the colour makes it an outstanding example of amlikar shawls.
