Dr. Vasundhara Kavali Filliozat is an Indian historian, art historian, and epigraphist whose work has contributed significantly to the study of Karnataka’s temple traditions, Vijayanagara history, and the cultural landscape of Hampi, ne of India’s most important historical and sacred sites.

Her scholarship is particularly noted for integrating inscriptional evidence, field observation, and regional history to build historically grounded interpretations of South Indian heritage.

Academic Formation and Intellectual Background

Born into a scholarly family, Dr. Filliozat pursued higher studies in history and developed a multilingual academic background that includes Sanskrit, Kannada, Tamil, French, and English. This linguistic range has remained central to her research, enabling her to work across inscriptions, literary traditions, regional histories, and international scholarly networks.

Her work reflects a sustained engagement with the historical and cultural traditions of Karnataka, especially through the study of temples, inscriptions, architecture, and sacred geography. 

Research on Hampi and Vijayanagara

Dr. Filliozat is widely associated with research on Hampi and the Vijayanagara Empire, particularly through studies that combine archaeological observation with inscriptional and cultural analysis. 

A recurring aspect of her work has been the emphasis on regional historical identity, including her public advocacy for referring to the Vijayanagara Empire as the “Karnataka Empire,” a formulation she has discussed in lectures and interviews. Her research has also contributed to the broader cultural visibility of Hampi during the period in which the site gained increasing national and international heritage recognition.

A Lifelong Intellectual Partnership with Dr. Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat 

An important dimension of Dr. Filliozat’s scholarly life is her long intellectual partnership with her husband and Padma Sri-winning French scholar, Dr. Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat. Dr. Vasundhara Filliozat first met Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat while studying under his father in Paris, beginning a scholarly association that later developed into a lifelong academic and personal partnership.

Dr. Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat taught Sanskrit in Paris for many years and later became deeply involved in Indian studies and South Indian heritage research. Their shared work has connected French Indological scholarship with regional historical studies in Karnataka, particularly through research, publications, lectures, and preservation-oriented cultural engagement.

The couple has often been described as dividing their time between France and Mysuru, reflecting a sustained intellectual life shaped by both Indian and European academic traditions.

Publications and Research Contributions

Dr. Filliozat has authored and co-authored several works on Hampi, Vijayanagara history, and South Indian temple traditions. Her publications are marked by close attention to inscriptions, architecture, local traditions, and historical continuity.
