Book Description
About the Book
A tribute to India's unique and colourful cultural richness, this one-of-a-kind curation brings together mainstream rural and urban customs as well as lesser-known ethnic traditions of India. From the intriguing wedding rites of the Nyishis of Arunachal Pradesh or the Roce ceremony of the Christians to the more well-known mourning practices on Muharram, and from the dazzling Lai Haraoba dance and music ceremonies of the Meitei tribe to the breathtaking gajan festival of rustic Bengal, where body piercing takes centre stage, this compendium has it all. While describing the rituals, this engaging and essential reference book also details the geographical and historical landscape of many. It also highlights the ethnological wealth of the subcontinent in terms of its metaphysical, material, cultural and occupational diversity. Amazing Rituals of India is, on the one hand, an accessible, engrossing read for the curious reader and, on the other, a diving board for students of anthropology, sociology and human geography. Combining both the essential and the exotic, this book can be a great source of ideas for writers, journalists and performing artists, and a handy reference for those working in governance.

About the Author
Swayam Ganguly was born and raised in Jamshedpur and currently lives in Kolkata. He wears many hats: a published author, director of corporate films, editorial consultant for various publishers, an aficionado of sports and an enthusiast of Indian culture.

Preface
The spontaneous induction of the Gayatri mantra at a young age made him curious and passionate about the diverse culture and rituals of India. However, his dispassionate research backed by a rational mind allows him no fanatical glorification or preaching.

This unique compilation of amazing rituals covering the length and breadth of the country is thematically aligned yet varied. While some rituals are light, some may seem dark, gritty and, to some, regressive; equally there are many that are elaborate, sophisticated and nuanced. The book does not claim to cover the complete list of rituals, but its focus is to spotlight the most striking or surprising and introduce some among the lesser-known ones. Thus, while mainstream rituals have not been skipped altogether, they are relatively fewer. Also included are some rituals that may no longer be in practice but reveal some unmissable aspects of India's past. This book does not attempt to judge any culture or ritual. The inclusion of any facts does not intend to show them as being more important than others that may have been excluded.
