About the Book Divya leads a blissful life within the secure walls of the palace even as the world outside rages with caste politics and religious strife, until one night of pleasure changes her entire world. She gets pregnant only to be spurned by her lover. To preserve her high-born family's name she leaves her sheltered existence and trudges through life on her own, first as a slave and then as a court dancer. Adversity finally opens her eyes to the truth-a woman of a high family is not free. Only a prostitute is free. Divya decides that, by enslaving her body, she will preserve the freedom of her mind. Set in the first century sc against a background of the conflict for supremacy between Hindu and Buddhist ideologies, Divya is a poignant tale that combines vivid imagination with rich historical details. About the Author YASHPAL (1903-1976) began to write while serving a life sentence for his participation, as a comrade of Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad, in the armed struggle for India's independence. What he wrote formed his first collection of short stories, Pinjare ki Udan, published in 1938. After his release Yashpal dazzled Hindi readers with the political journal, Viplava, which he founded and published with the help of Prakashvati, a revolutionary, whom he later married in prison. He wrote more than fifty books including collections of short stories, novels, essays, a play and memoirs of his revolutionary days. Yashpal died in 1976 while writing the fourth volume of his reminiscences.

Foreword ONE OF THE REASONS YASHPAL STANDS OUT FROM HIS contemporaries is that he is a writer of ideological conflicts. His social commitment and objectivity influence his works very apparently and provide an ideological base to Hindi fiction. Most of his novels either have a political background or his characters are politically conscious and active. Dada Comrade, Geeta, Manushya Ke Roop, Deshdrohi, Meri Teri Uski Baat and his most acclaimed novel, Jhootha Sach, which ranks among world classics, all have the socio-politically charged pre-independent India as a backdrop. Yashpal witnessed India's freedom struggle and the county's partition thereafter. He was a part of an extremist organization and worked with great revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad; he was even imprisoned for a long period, due to his anti-British activities. It was in prison that he started to write and later decided to make writing a full-time career. Jhootha Sach is a comprehensive account of Partition and the great human tragedy that followed in its aftermath. It is a saga of love and hate, political ambitions and the pressure of society and, above all, the suffering of the common masses, be they Hindu or Muslim. Women are another focus in Yashpal's novels as well as stories.

Preface THE BASIS FOR DIVYA IS HISTORY, BUT HISTORY COLOURED BY imagination. It is an endeavour to portray the motives of man and the dynamics of his world. I have attempted, as a literary experiment, to add realism to a fictional tale played out against a historical background. That this portrayal may contain errors is entirely possible. We do not have extensive knowledge of that period of history, nor can I lay claim to any store of scholarly learning. I, therefore, approached the historical setting with an imagination restrained by an awareness of my shortcomings, but impelled by my fascination with this classical period of the history of India. This may not be acceptable to knowledgeable readers, who may be turned off by any resulting inaccuracies. We study and analyse our past with the idea of learning about our future. In spite of our failings in the present, we find clues to our capabilities in our past. History does not repeat itself as individual incidents. History means change, but individual and collective striving for survival and progress has always been present in the sequence of change; it is the moving force behind all change. The study of history analyses the creative urges of an individual and his society as circumstances change. Human beings not only change their existing circumstances, they also strive to create new circumstances.
