Power motive is one of the important human motives but relatively less efforts have been made to investigate its various aspects for the reason that power is considered undesirable in our equalitarian society. But the fact remains that it is basic to our nature. Disposition to power is found in every individual and its expression is noted in many situations. But it is also a paradox that everything that is done for the sake of power is denied consciously. This has led many psychologists to conclude that as sexuality is repressed and denied so power is repressed and denied but from within no can deny their existence. However, power motive defined as quest for power and desire to have impact on others also leads to competence and leadership role for the sake of personal and social welfare. In view of the realization that power motive exists and it can not be ignored as the important human motive interest in the research of its several aspects began. Veroff, McClelland and Winter made the pioneer studies and others followed their lead. But most of the researches were done by the western psychologist and few have been attempted by our own country men. I started working on several aspects of power motive in the last decade of twentieth century and my research scholars Brajbala Sah, Alka Jha, Bijoy Mohan Prasad Singh, Rajesh Tiwary and Sushma Kumari provided me immense help. I acknowledge their works and extend my sincere thanks to them. The present book is based on the theoretical vision and empirical findings of the author. The book constitutes of ten chapters. The first chapter throws light on the concept and kinds of power motive. The second chapter highlights the theories of its origin. The third chapter deals with the sex difference in the expression of power motive. The fourth chapter is concerned with the methods of measurement of power motive. The fifth chapter is about the construction of new objective measures of power motive. The sixth chapter describes some empirical studies regarding the influence of family environment on the development of power motive. The family environment included parent-child relation, socio-economic status, family size, birth-order and a some other social-personal factors. The seventh chapter throws light on how power motive is manifested in behaviours such as career-choice, drinking, smoking, leadership role and marital role. The eighth chapter reveals how power motive is related with some personality characteristics like locus of control, risk-taking, authoritarianism, Machiavellianism and aggression. In ninth chapter empirical evidences regarding the relation of configuration of power and affiliation motives with six kinds of values, viz., theoretical, economic, aesthetic, social, political, and religious and adjustments in four areas of home, health, social, and emotional have been presented. And in tenth and the last chapter the life style of power motivated individuals have been researched. The life styles included alienation, intolerance of ambiguity, directiveness, values orientation, political ideology, leadership preference, life satisfaction, love for people and love for animals and moralism. The book thus has a multidimensional approach and is very useful for general reading and for research purposes in the area.
Dr. Harndeo Ojha has a long career in psychology, Bom on 2nd January 1940 he did his M. A. in Psychology from Patna university in January, 1962 and then shifted to Bhagalpur University in October 1963 and retired as Professor and Head of the University Department of Psychology, T. M. Bhagalpur University. After retirement he served as visiting professor in the department of Psychology, B. R. A. Bihar University Muzaffarpur and principal investigator of Major U. G. C. Research Project which was completed in 2005. He has published 55 research articles in reputed research journals out of which 12 are in international journals of USA, Holland, Britain and Japan. He has supervised 25 research projects towards the award of Ph. D. degree and has constructed more than a dozen psychological tests. His frequent participation in several seminars and symposium shows his active academic interest even after retirement. Besides his academic excellence Dr. Ojha has also shown his administrative skills as Head of the Department, Coordinator, IGNOU Study Centre, Member of the Synate and Syndicate and Coordinator/Chairman of several academic and inquiry committees. He has been honoured by ABI as Man of the Year in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and several biographical societies have published his biography as Man of Achievement. Besides he was invited to chair one of the sessions of International Conference on Authoritarianism in 1988 at Potsdam, New York. After retirement he was nominated as educational expert member in the Syndicate of Bhagalpur University for three years. He is associated as Life member with Indian Academy of Psychology (IAOP), Indian Academy of Applied Psychology (IAAP), Madras Psychology Society and Praachi Psycho-cultural Research Association and in addition he is the member of the board of editors of Indian Journal of Psychological Issues, Calcutta, and Journal of Psychological Issues, Nagpur.
