It is no longer regarded as a controversial statement that the linguistic theories offer greater insights to second language pedagogy in general and materials production in particular. A variety of instructional materials based on linguistic principles are in vogue in second language teaching today and a series of sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic researches have made language teaching a multidimensional phenomenon. Each dimension is now meticulously studied and materials are produced to acquire the underlying language ability.
Until recently, the lexical dimension has not attracted due attention of the language teachers and researchers. Now, the applied linguists have a special concern for a pedagogical statement. A set of such pedagogical statements constitute a practical grammar called 'Pedagogical grammar'. The sequence of the pedagogical statements of this grammar forms a basis on which instructional material can be construct-ed. This evolves different learning strategies in the mind of the learners and makes successive approximation of the second language possible (Noblitt, 1972). However, such pedagogical grammars are incomplete in a way that the relationships between grammar and lexicon are not adequately established and as a result lexical or vocabulary teaching is ignored completely.
Lexicon is part of a grammar and it cannot be learnt in isolation. Therefore, the interrelationships between gram-mar and lexicon must be carefully maintained by the language teacher from the beginning to the end. The pedagogical dictionary which is proposed here aims at teaching the lexicon of the second language maintaining its relationships with grammar and assuming a more pivotal role in the second language pedagogy.
This introduction consists of three parts. The first part is devoted to Zgusta's notion of pedagogical dictionary, the definition of pedagogical dictionary proposed in the pre-sent book and its theoretical implication and organization. The second part constitutes a grammatical sketch of the Tamil verb since this is a category-wise dictionary confined to the entries of Tamil verbs. The third part provides different verb paradigms.
