Preface

This book is an exposition on Jainism from its origin to modern times. It is a conscientious piece of work exploring different aspects of Jainism in the light of modern viewpoint. It emphasizes on the historical developments of Jainism from its earliest time to its latest version outlining several factors, which led to such a growth. As one of the world's major religions, founded on the spiritual principles of non-violence (ahimsa). truth, and righteous conduct, Jainism has today a very long history of a splendid living tradition, with a well-defined world view, philosophy, and code of ethics. This volume covers its beginnings, antiquity, doctrines, Tirthankaras, spread and among other aspects, its contribution to world's culture and art heritage.

Jainism stands for brotherhood and unity between all beings without distinction of colour and creed and the most characteristic feature is a gracious and winning tolerance which is common in all forms of Jainism. Jainism is not only deeply philosophical, but also possesses a system of evolution. This book is therefore offered as a modest contribution to a cause which every true lover of humanity must have at heart.

Introduction

Jainism is one of the oldest living religions of India. It predates chronicles as per recordings in the Hindu Holy Scriptures. It is a distinctive system, quite different and independent from other systems of Indian philosophy. Jainism is a religious faith of strictly human origin and is preached and practiced by one who has achieved ideal knowledge, nirvana and self-control by his own individual efforts and has been released from the shakels of corporeal existence, the cycle of births and deaths. Such human beings are regarded as Gods of Jainism. The idea of God as a creator, protector, and destroyer of the world doesn't exist in Jainism. The concept of God's rebirth as a human being to demolish the devils is not accepted in Jainism. In short Jainism doesn't believe in creator God. but it is not an atheistic religion because it believes in many Gods who are self realized persons and who have achieved nirvana. In older times it was known by many names such as Saman tradition, or the religion of Nirganth or Jin.
