adhyatma-vidya netanum saddharmacharanattinum bhukti mukti prade devi sashtangam pranamichidam I prostrate before the goddess who grants both bhukti and mukti (worldly enjoyments and spiritual salvation), with the supplication that I gain in spiritual knowledge and will be able to uphold dharma (righteousness).
A seed has been planted inside your heart and love is the water that feeds. With love eternally it will grow; the Divine Mother, She makes it so. Be in the now, you will find, and be in the heart, you will see. Allow this love that grows so deep inside, for within there lies a seed. - Traditional South American hymn We are currently living in the Kali Yuga (the dark age of material-ism). Dharma is at an all-time low. We are surrounded on all sides by war, violence, disease, hostility, famine, overpopulation and environmental destruction. Amma says repeatedly, "The world is caught in the grip of an octopus of fear." People are becoming more and more isolated from themselves and each other. The balance of nature is greatly disturbed. The seasons rarely come on time. There are droughts, floods, storms, earthquakes and tsunamis causing great destruction.
There was a time when humans and nature co-existed in per-fect harmony. Now, our ignorance and our separation from our true Self and from nature have greatly disturbed that balance.
The intention of this book is to provide a basic introduction to the ancient systems of Ayurveda and yoga, as well as further exploration of how they can be used for restoring the lost dharma within ourselves and in nature. Through Ayurveda and yoga we can manifest our highest aspirations and live a peaceful, harmo-nious and balanced life. We can learn to live in rhythm with the cycles of nature, both within and around us. We can uphold dharma and restore the beauty of God's divine creation here on Mother Earth, and we can awaken to the splendor and glory of the love deep within us.
Only love can heal and restore the lost harmony in this world. Love is the answer to every single question. Love is the solution to all problems. Amma often says, "Love is the only medicine that can truly heal the wounds of the world." Ayurveda and yoga are pathways to awakening this divine love that is hidden deep within each one of us.
May this offering be a manifestation of that Supreme Uncon-ditional Love. May it be a small lamp to light the way through the Kali Yuga. May it serve as a small tool in the garden of life, and may the seeds of consciousness be firmly planted in the soil of love.
Everything will be known spontaneously if you do sadhana [spiritual practice). Understand who you are. Know the Self. Then you can lead a life without attachment to anything. Such a state of mind will come if you do sadhana sincerely.
Amma In the beginning was but the absolute Self alone.
Aitareya Upanishad 1.1 Ayurveda, the "science of life," is the ancient wisdom science of living in harmony with each other and our environment. It is a part of the spiritual tradition of Sanatana Dharma, or the Eternal Truth.
Because Sanatana Dharma transcends all boundaries of caste, creed, nationality and religion, it is applicable to all people of all places and times. The knowledge of Ayurveda was given to us by the ancient rishis (seers). It expounds spiritual insights for living happy, healthful and peaceful lives, while seeking the ultimate goal of Self-realization. Ayurveda also incorporates the mystical science of yoga and Vedanta (the philosophy of non-dual or uni-fied consciousness). The knowledge of Ayurveda is found in all of the four Vedas. The main ayurvedic text, the Charaka Samhita, describes the nature of the universe with all its manifestations, and how to bring ourselves into harmony with it. The sayings "We are the microcosm of the macrocosm" and "As above, so below" eloquently explain the universal truth that the whole universe is interconnected and interdependent.
Ayurveda is the traditional natural healing system of India.
The concept of Ayurveda is not just focused on medical treat-ment or diagnosis of a diseased condition; it is a set of practical, simple guidelines for living a long and healthful life. Through these principles, we can bring our bodies and minds into perfect balance. Ayurveda has a theoretical basis, but is also completely practical in nature. The word "Ayurveda" is composed of two words - ayus and veda. Ayu means "life" and veda means "science." Together, the words mean "the knowledge of life." In Ayurveda, the process of ayu is considered as a combined experience of body, senses, psyche/mind and soul. Ayu represents all aspects of life, including death, dying and immortality.
