Preface The present work is an humble attempt primarily at a comprehensive and critical exposition of the realistic views of the Nyaya-Vaiseşika school commonly characterised as an orthodox school of Indian Philosophy, but nowhere the idea-list's claim of the heterodox school has been overlooked. In my opinion, both the so called orthodox and heterodox systems have equally contributed to the logical thought in India and it would be hardly justifiable to give undue prominence either to the idealist or the realist system or to ignore the claim of either school. I have, therefore, tried to present all the important realist views of the Nyaya-Vaiseşika school, and, at the same time, I have discussed them in the light of the essential features of the idealist claim of the Yogacara Buddhism and the Advaita Vedanta. This comparative presentation would be greatly helpful for an objective and dis-passionate study. There can be no two opinions that only an objective study avoids the pitfall of digressing into bye-lanes of sectarianism and divisive concepts. An objective reader really needs a catholic heart to absorb the views of his opponents and penetrating eyes to peep into other's camp. No system of philosophy is proverbially final and no philosopher can make an absolute claim for his stand. With a view to encourage insight and open up a vista for deep study, I have not hesitated to discuss diverse currents of thoughts relevant to the main issue. At times, I have devoted more space in giving faithful exposition to the Nyaya views, but I have never wilfully overlooked the other side relevant to the theme. Such a study in Logic, I think, makes us aware of the interplay of the influence of one system on the other and helps us in understanding clearly the standpoints of both the systems. This humble study aims, however briefly, to fulfil the above condition.
