FOREWORD

The North Eastern region of India is one of the mega biodiversity hotspots of the World. The region is also home to a very large number of medicinal plants species that are extremely valuable for their role in traditional health practices among the different tribes inhabiting the region. Tripura is one such North Eastern state bestowed with huge medicinal flora, some of which is highly endemic and has been providing livelihood besides health security in some of the remote regions of the state where health infrastructure is generally quite inadequate. The attempt by the State Medicinal Plants Board, Tripura and the Forest Department to compile the information on medicinal plants of the state is an immensely valuable piece of work being published through the book titled "Medicinal Plants of Tripura".

I am confident that the pictorial information on the medicinal plants occurring in Tripura, giving their local names, scientific nomenclature, distribution and the local usage will go a long way in showcasing the medicinal plants wealth of the State and also help develop schemes and programmes for harnessing this potential for the benefit of the society at large. The book will also be of immense value to those involved in the field of medicinal plants conservation and development.

I extend my good wishes to the team of authors for bringing out this immensely valuable book.

PREFACE

This "Medicinal Plants of Tripura" is a photographic illustration of 203 medicinal species of Tripura which will not only help in identification of these species but also give a short idea about its medicinal uses and properties. It is designed primarily as an identification hand book for field officers and staff related to medicinal species. The 203 species includes not only some of the common medicinal species but also many rare and lesser known species found in Tripura. The species has also been cross checked with the descriptions in the Flora of Tripura, Volume 1&11 by Sri D. B. Deb.

The collection includes trees, shrubs and herbs which are of medicinal value. The plant species shown in the plates are all taken locally from various sites in Tripura in their natural habitats. The descriptions include the accurate scientific names, local Bengali names, families, economic parts used and the common medicinal uses. The photographs are taken mostly from Trishna Wild Life Sanctuary and Ambassa Forest Division which are the most forested areas in Tripura. While identifying these species local names collected from local traditional healers came to be very useful.

This has been published with the hope that it will benefit all those associated with medicinal plants sector including Scientists, Researchers, Forest officers, Forest field staffs, Students, Traditional practitioners etc. This is the first attempt to photographically illustrate the medicinally important species of Tripura.
