Book Description
Foreword

Upnishad is the name of spiritual knowledge or Brahma- vidya. They constitute the knowledge part of the Vedas. It is that eternally lit lamp of knowledge which has spread light since Creation. It is eternal, perennial and indestructible. Its light has that immortality which has nourished the roots of Sanatan Dharma. It is India's own treasure meant for the welfare of the whole world.

Up = near, nishad = nishidati = one who sits. Upnishad is that person who, having reached near the ultimate reality (Param Tatva), settles down quietly. The ultimate reality beggars description. The Upnishads lead us to the realization of that indescribable ultimate reality-Parabrahma. The Upnishads are the key to reach and unlock the ultimate reality.

There are 10 main Upnishads-Ish, Ken, Katha, Prashna, Mundak, Mandukya, Taitiriya, Aitareya, Chhandogya and Brihadaranyak.

Total Vedas are divided into 3 parts-the Upnishad part, the mantra part, and the Brahman part. The Upnishad part deals with the knowledge section (Gyan-kand) of the Vedas. In the present manvantar 1180 branches of the Vedas ensued. A similar number of the Upnishads, the Brahman and the mantras also followed. This count of the Vedas is obtained in the Puranas and the Upnishads. But today even a hundredth part of it is not available. Granthas equal to the Upnishads are found in the Puranas as well: for instance Shrimad Bhagvad Geeta in the Mahabharata, which is considered as the essence of the Upnishads. Seen in this context, we find that the bases of all of our religious granthas are in some form or the other at some place or another in the Vedas. Divorced from the Vedas, they have no existence at all.
