Book Description

About the Book

Patna in the Freedom Movement (1885-1974) is the Ph.D thesis of Dr. Mrs.) Kabita Sinha. After some modifications and changes it has been published in book form. The book is a micro-analysis to project the role of the city of Patna in different phases of India's struggle for independence. Patna since the beginning of the nineteenth century has been an important centre of Anti-British activities. The city maintained its tradition and with the establishment of the Indian National Congress in 1885, it gradually became an important centre of Congress activities. With the creation of an independent Bihar in 1912 Patna became the capital and the hub of political activities of the Indian National Congress. By the first decade of the twentieth century Patna had a band of dedicated nationalist leaders like Mazharul Haque, Hasan Imam, Ali Imam, Abdul Bari, Purnendu Narain Sinha, Sachidanand Sinha etc.
Patna also uniquely responded to the Gandhian Movements, the communal scenario and finally the transfer of power. In fact Patna became the trend setter in national politics with various social groups of Patna like the middle class, the students, the worker and the women played an active part in the Freedom Movement.
The book has been based on important Primary and Secondary sources such as reports of the Indian National Congress, Proceedings and Reports of the Bihar Provincial Congress Committee, newspapers and biographies and autobiographies of important nationalist leaders.

Preface

This study is a micro-analysis that is to project the role of the City of Patna in the history of the Freedom Movement in different phases of India's struggle for independence, Patna since the 19th Century has been an important centre of anti-British activities. Patna maintained the tradition and with the establishment of Indian National Congress in 1885, the City of Patna gradually became an important centre of Congress activities. In the early years the response to Congress activities in Patna was not very enthusiastic. But with the creation of an independent Bihar in 1912, Patna became the capital and the hub of political activities of the Indian National Congress.
By the first decade of the twentieth century Patna had a band of dedicated nationalist leaders like Mazharul Haque, Hasan Imam, Ali Imam, Abdul Bari, Purnendu Narain Sinha, Sachchidanand Sinha, Rai Puran Chand, Chandra Bansi Sahay, Rajendra Prasad and several others. The first session of the Bihar Provincial Conference met at Patna in early 1908 under the Presidentship of Ali Imam. Subsequently the 27th Session of the Indian National Congress was held at Patna. At a time when the Indian National Movement was confronted with the cancerous problem of communalism, the Muslim leaders of Patna presented a unique spectacle of unity and communal harmony. The association of the Muslim leaders had an important effect on the success of Bihar Provincial Conference and also the Congress activities.
In 1912 the 27th Session of the Indian National Congress was held at Patna. Rao Bahadur R.N. Mudolkar was the President. Mazharul Haque was the Chairman of the Reception Committee.

Introduction

In recent times regional history and local history has attracted scholars to write on various themes and areas. In the history of India's freedom struggle, much has been written on the important role of Bihar. Dr. K.K. Dutta's pioneer work History of Freedom Movement in Bihar in three volumes aroused much interest in the subject. As a result of this during the last several years much has been written on the history of Freedom Movement in Bihar with particular reference to different areas and districts in Bihar. Surprisingly enough the pivotal role played by the City of Patna in the history of Freedom Movement had not been projected. Very recently Dr. Surendra Gopal's book "Patna in the 19th Century" aroused interest in me to establish a link between Patna's importance in the 19th Century and her important role in the freedom struggle in the 20th Century. The City of Patna was an important Centre of anti-British struggle in the 19th Century. In 1845-46 when the British were engaged in the First Anglo-Sikh War an attempt was made at Patna to strike at the East India Company's authority at Patna. G.B. Malleson has referred to this in his work "The Mutiny of the Bengal Army". He wrote "Even so lately as 1846 its (Patna's) Mohammedan nobility had endeavoured to take advantage of our balanced fortunes on the banks of Sutlaz. They had then succeeded ir. some native officers and sepoys stationed at Dinapore. Similarly, the Commissioner of Patna Division, William Tayler has referred to an incident of 1846. He says that in that very year dangerous plot was detected at Patna. The conspirators attempted to "tamper with the Sepoys" in this conspiracy the "Mohammedans of Patna and the neighbouring districts" participated.
