Book Description
About the Book
Project Omega is about the future of life on Earth and the solar system and what can be done to safeguard it. Cosmology informs us that ultimately the Sun, the life giver, will become a red giant, enlarge in size and swallow up Mercury, Venus, and Earth and thus turn into a life-taker. Since this is estimated to happen hundreds of millions of years in the future, we have time to prepare for this eventuality. But auch before that, it is conceivable that a nass extinction event like what caused the destruction of dinosaurs kills humans on Earth, or the cause of destruction may be a biological pathogen that escapes a bioweapons lab or is maliciously introduced by a nadnan. We must, therefore, ensure that humans are safe at least at one other location so that, if need be, they can resettle Earth. This requires the colonization of the nearest astronomical objects, namely the Moon and Mars, to decrease the probability of human extinction and have then serve as springboard for further space exploration.

Preface
This book is about the future of life on Earth and the solar system and what can be done to safeguard it. But much before that, it is conceivable that a mass extinction event like what caused the destruction of dinosaurs kills humans on Earth, or the cause of destruction may be a biological pathogen that escapes a bioweapons lab or is maliciously introduced by a madman. We must, therefore, ensure that humans are safe at least at one other location so that, if need be, they can resettle Earth. This requires the colonization of the nearest astronomical objects, namely the Moon and Mars, to decrease the probability of human extinction and have them serve as springboard for further space exploration. But the atmospheric conditions at the Moon and Mars are extreme. At both these places the pressure is far below at which people can survive without special suits. Shielded structures would need to be constructed to serve as pressure vessels as in a spacecraft together with complex life-support
