Build Self-Awareness, Communicate Effectively, Manage Emotions and Thrive in Every Situation.
Preface
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the holistic development of students by integrating knowledge, skills, values, and practical competencies essential for personal and professional success. In alignment with this vision, the course Psychological Skills for Everyday Life has been introduced as a Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) for undergraduate students under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP).
This book has been specifically designed according to the prescribed syllabus of Semester I Psychology. It aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of psychological skills that are relevant to everyday life, interpersonal relationships, emotional well-being, and personal growth. The content has been organized in a simple, systematic, and student-friendly manner to facilitate effective learning and application. It is designed to equip students with practical psychological skills that can be applied in everyday personal, academic, social, and professional settings.
The book covers three major units. The first unit, Selfand Personality, introduces students to the concepts of self-concept, self-esteem, personality traits and types, and self-awareness. Understanding oneself is the foundation of psychological growth and forms the basis for healthy decision-making and personal development.
The second unit, Communication Skills, focuses on the essential components of effective communication, including verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, feedback, empathy, and assertiveness training. These skills are indispensable for building healthy relationships, resolving conflicts, and functioning effectively in academic, social, and professional settings.
The third unit, Emotional Intelligence and Coping, explores the nature of emotions, stress management, anger management, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, psychological first aid, resilience, mental strength, and helping individuals in crisis situations. In today's rapidly changing and demanding world, these psychological skills are vital for maintaining mental health, coping with adversity, and promoting overall well-being.
While preparing this book, special emphasis has been placed on presenting psychological concepts in a practical and application-oriented manner. Real-life examples and evidence-based strategies have been incorporated wherever appropriate to help students connect theoretical knowledge with everyday experiences. The book not only seeks to enhance academic understanding but also encourages the development of self-awareness, emotional competence, resilience, and interpersonal effectiveness.
It is hoped that this book will serve as a valuable resource for students, teachers, and learners interested in applying psychological principles to improve the quality of everyday life. Any suggestions for further improvement of this work will be sincerely welcomed and appreciated.
