It's a very happy occasion for us to be able to present a preliminary book entitled 'The Reminiscences of Dr. S.P. Sen' shortly. This will be followed by the centenary volume on receiving the state grant for the purpose. The current volume is also unique in character it gives the reminiscences of Dr. Sen and his multi-faceted activities. He was a sound scholar on the subject of the French in India, a very popular teacher at the Calcutta University P.O. Department where he used to teach the History of the Far East, he was also an institute builder which served the cause of history in more than one dimension. Apart from the regular activities of seminars and conferences, he had the vision of producing the pioneering work The Dictionary of National Biography 4 volumes. He also produced the Sources of the Indian History in 6 volumes and also Historians and Historiography in India in 3 volumes. The institution has lasted for long fifty years till now, the only effective Bengali academic enterprise so far. He also planned a very important historical journal Quarterly Review of Historical Studies which he edited and published 4 times in a year. It is now known far and wide and has recently won the recognition of the Univershy Grants Commission. All these involved tremendous physical and mental activities which pf rhaps burnt him out at an early age of 65 in 1979.
The entries in this sling volume are not only pleasant reading but also comes from the soul of the writers. From his contemporaries down to the youngest students had contributed at least one tribute to this great savant. We are confident that this volume will be very much well received by both the history scholars and the general public. It will be a part of the growing literature on Indian historiography.
