Book Description

Introduction The purpose of this work is to record a short introductory account of the Sambalpuri speech as used at the present time. This study also aims at taking stock of the lexical assets of Odisha and finding out so that these can be utilized towards the evolution and development of an Integrated Odia Vocabulary which will incorporate within its corpus qualities of being more readily and widely acceptable than the current Standard Odia. This linguistic survey is the first of its kind concerning Sambalpuri language and is presented as a sampling or partial collection of facts, taken and used to approximate what a complete collection and analysis might reveal. This may be accepted as an initial contribution to the study of Sambalpuri Language. This structural sketch based on the study of a corpus of linguistic materials is prepared as a preliminary descriptive and contrastive grammar of Sambalpuri and Odia. The key differences between the grammatical systems of Sambalpuri and Odia lie in the grammatical core consisting of (1) parts of speech, (2) grammatical categories, (3) functors or inflectional affixes and (4) construction types.
