Astrology and Vaastu Shastra are two independent complete sciences but both are related to the events in life. In Astrology, prediction is the main purpose. In Vaastu Shastra corrections in the aspirations of the directions; to change the effect of cycles of time; is the main motive.
So Vaastu Shastra acts as the remedial medium to reduce the intensity of the prediction given by the astrologers. In this regards these two shastra are complementary to each other. In astrology planets-zodiac signs and nakshatras are play parameters where as in Vaastu Shastra; deities-energy-directions are the main tools to bring positivity in life. Elements act as the bridge that connects Astrology and Vaastu Shastra. Zodiac signs are connected to directions. 1-5-9 signs represent East. 2-6-10 represent South. 3-7-11 represent West. 4-8-12 represent North. Zodiac signs are classified by elements too e.g. 1-5-9 as fire element;2-6-10 as earth element;3-7-11 as wind element and 4-8-12 as water element. So equation of directions-signs-element is fixed in astrology. These signs are in ether element, if the form of the house is correct then these signs-elements descend down on the earth in a clockwise path and settle in the sub directions; hence in Vaastu the elements are classified with the sub directions i.e. Southeast-fire, Southwest-earth, Northwest-wind and Northeast-water element. Automatically planets also form the sets as the lords of these signs and get classified as elements through their virtues. Mars-Sun-Jupiter to east signifies fire; Venus-Mercury-Saturn to the south signify earth element; Mercury-Venus-Saturn to the west signify wind element, Moon-Mars-Jupiter to the north signify the water element.
So main directions and sub directions, both are connected to elements with two different forms of the same element, giving rise to the Eight element theory (अष्टतत्वपध्दती) in Vaastu Shastra.
